Today marks the199 years of the birth of Francis Cook, responsible for the design of the current romantic garden and palace of Montserrat in Sintra, Portugal. Holder of one of the greatest English fortunes of all times and great art collector, Francis cook bought the farm from Montserrat in 1863. He promoted the recovery of the Palace - converted it into summer residence of members of the Cook family - and planted an exotic park , with species from all over the world. In 1870, Francis Cook was made Vicomte de Montserrat by King Dom Luís I.
