Protea cynaroides is part of my top 10 plants. Genus name honors the Greek sea god Proteus (son of Poseidon) who was known for being able to change his appearance at will.
Its large peculiar flower heads can last for several months each year.
Their sweet, sugar-rich nectar and the brightly coloured bracts and styles attract pollinators.
Unfortunately, King Protea is endemic to South Africa and difficult to adapt in London as it needs poor and very well drained soils.
Proteas live in a fragile environment. Of the 370 protea species, about 120 of them are listed as endangered. There are very few wild proteas anymore, most of them are now cultivated in greenhouses or nurseries.
